Preliminary task Group video “Massive Attack
Evaluation
Some good things in this video include the fact there are multiple actors, which increases diversity and representation. The use of one-take can be interesting if it is carried out in a more correct way, but the idea seems reasonable. The ending of the video is quite good as all the actors meet at the end which creates closure, and key frames are used to create a slow fade to black.
I think quite a few things with this video would need to be improved -
For example, a lot of the lip syncing doesn't add up and makes the video seem unprofessional. Though it is respectable as a practice video, it isn't the most entertaining due to the long takes with very little narrative. The technical code could be improved - there is shaky handling which can make it hard to watch for some viewers, especially if they are motion sick and can't watch lots of movement. For my final music video I will have more time to fully plan, film and edit which will result in something much more effective that considers Barthe's codes and its target audience.
I also think editing could have been improved as there is no evidence of colour treatment. Due to this the video looks very unprofessional. Successful music videos tend to look dreamlike or surreal as this is interesting to an audience, which could have been achieve with increased white balance or brightness.
The narrative is quite weak but this could have been improved with more advanced planning. The storyboard was followed as we had originally wanted to walk around with one-shot following different people, but it wasn't orchestrated in the best way. We could have implemented costumes and props more effectively to contribute to a narrative.
