Camera techniques and operation

  • don't leave camera on automatic so you can use all of the functions
  • wide shot, mid shot, close up
  • what information needs to be conveyed?? facial expression = close up
  • each shot has more information than the last, makes it more interesting
  • storyboard to plan shots (celtx)
  • framing - major objects in a third. looking room between the right and left thirds if there is an actor looking at something
  • unconventional framing would be missing out the looking room (for example he is looking to the left, and on the left third)
  • camera height (high angle, low angle)
  • continuous props and actors from scene to scene
  • eyelines must be accurate - camera on one side of the eyeline
  • wide lens and long lens
  • keep camera steady and smooth
  • handheld camera movement - better with moving subject
  • focus -- (dslr) move white box. magnification button. focus
  • frame rate - pictures that appear like motion due to multiple frames per second.
