Inspiring Music Videos

1st Inspiration

This is one of my ultimate favourite music videos because it's very clever - especially because of the plot twist in the narrative. Although I feel it would be very hard to achieve this, it's definitely created inspiration for telling a story in a particular way. I love the idea of creating action match cuts and parallel images in my music video (such as the ones presented of photos compared to real life, or alone compared to in love). I feel it has a very emotional impact and I would like to try and create some kind of similar effect.

  • I would like to use the performance element of the video of looking directly at the camera
  • My main performer will also be a female with typical makeup/costume representation
  • I hope I can tell a good story like this video does

2nd Inspiration

First of all, I love how this music video is one-take. It feels like watching a performance, and emphasises the emotional impact. As well as this, I love the meaning and use of semantic code. The girl begins in a white outfit, which gradually darkens as she becomes unhappier. The gradual zoom out also creates hermenuetic code as there is a sense of mystery, the room slowly being revealed. There is a moment where the girl (and other elements such as a bookshelf) dissolves away or appear which I think is a very interesting use of the key frames and something I would like to consider using. This indicates time passing even though it is still one-take and he never moves.
I believe they created this effect by filming multiple background scenes where the bookshelves are there, however covering this with the clip where it isn't present so that they can swiftly make the bookshelf visible, use of chroma key.

  • I would like to use the element of performance with a narrative in the background
  • The direct address is effective
  • My song is also going to be fairly sad and slow

3rd Inspiration

I feel this may also be hard to create, however I like the effect of it being like a home movie with clips of when the singer was younger, and fuzzy camera effects. It doesn't feel professional and more relatable to the viewer. It also has representation of a social group that is not commonly in music videos, which is quite inspiring.

  • Perhaps I would use a montage but it depends on if it fits with my style of video
  • I would like to have multiple people interacting however my video wouldn't be as positive as this

I am taking some inspiration from this video in a variety of ways.

  • Female protagonist who maintains direct address with the audience
  • Multiple locations with a significant change at the end
  • Representation of women - feminine clothes and makeup
